Seagrass

Seagrass is the second in a series of collaborative photo-surreal works.

The process began with a large selection of reference shots from a cold days' shoot on a wildlife nature reserve on the Essex estuary. These were then combined to create the foreground and sky. Individual brush strokes were hand painted in to create the blades of grass that form the waves. The boat referenced is only a few years old so textures were then painted and applied to the hull to degrade and age it. Finally various gulls are depicted orbiting the stern of the boat in transit.

This image is intended to provoke social thought on the current state of the fishing industry, in particular the grey area between it's immediate future and sustainable development.

Montage of 3View boxEnlarge image

Textures including an oscillating background were completed after the basic camera moves were locked down. Each animation was 7-seconds long and rendered in PAL HD format. A small amount of post completed the work.

The underlying theme with this is painting is patriotism.

References were taken from the national press around the time of FIFA Euro 96. The Royal emblem in the centre was taken from the image of a pound coin under a magnifying glass.

Boris Vallejo and Frank Franzeta were influences at the time.

A project for the front cover of an RAF Hendon magazine.

Completed in around 60 hours, this was my first experience using the medium of oil paint. This painting was composed of several different stages: a linear drawing traced through, a grading sepia tone, under-painting wash, final render and varnish.

With an average draw time 30 seconds per pose, this 'speed-sketching' method is designed to develop observation skills. The main skill at work here is decision-making, choosing a coloured pencil being the first one.
